BioSante Libigel Failed as FSD Treatment

In 2010, Flibanserin was once giving hope to all female being a viagra version for women were finally available on market. However, FDA banned this drug and there goes the hope. In Dec,2011, a new drug was out called LibiGel by BioSante, but it failed to produce the right results that warrant an approval from FDA.

biosante libigelLibigel contains a certain amount of testosterone hormone to stimulate female sexual arousal and making her into the mood but this is no aphrodisiac  and it is apply on the upper arm. It has transdermal ability so that the testosterone in the gel are able to deliver to other area of skin through systemic distribution.

Biosante Libigel in itself is an amazing drug for treatment of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) especially in the area of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in postmenopausal women. As with any other drugs which need to go through stringent tests and trials on real subjects before it can be approved by FDA and safe for general usage,  be it a prescription or non-prescription drugs.

On Dec 2011, Biosante Pharmaceuticals (BPAX) announced (after the stock market closed that day) that its flagship product (still under development), Libigel, ( also called Viagra for women), had produced unsatisfactory results. It was due to the inconclusive results based on the analysis of data at the beginning  from two key phase 3 efficacy trials.

Actually, Libigel was remarkably effective on its own, but the problem was that in the placebo-controlled trial and double-blind placebo did not deliver significantly better result than the placebo itself. It doesn’t matter, as it did not get significant difference whether with the placebo as with Libigel.

They were puzzled and believed that this may have to do with

(1) the study was skewed toward less scientific subjective measurements,

(2) too many uncontrolled variables,  and

(3) restoring testosterone levels may not be the key or primary measurement of successful experiment.

The company BioSante did not give up and development still ongoing but nothing was concluded or any date was given. There is nowhere you are going to expect anything anytime soon. If you are suffering from the symtoms of female sexual dysfunction, there are alternative solution.
